Maintenance & Aftercare Guide
Thank you for choosing Pro Spec Detailing to protect your vehicle with Paint Protection Film (PPF) and/or Ceramic Coating.
Both protection systems significantly enhance your vehicle’s resistance to environmental damage, contamination, and wear. However, proper maintenance is essential to ensure optimal performance and maintain warranty coverage.
Below you will find separate care instructions for PPF and Ceramic Coatings, including recommended washing techniques, maintenance schedules, and suitable products.
Safe Washing Guide
Correct washing techniques are essential to maintain the performance of your vehicle’s Paint Protection Film (PPF)and Ceramic Coating, while preventing swirl marks, scratches, and contamination buildup. We strongly recommend hand-washing your vehicle using proper tools and techniques.
Wash in Suitable Conditions
Always wash your vehicle:
• In shaded areas where possible
• Away from direct sunlight
• Using pH-neutral car shampoo and quality wash products
Washing in direct sunlight can cause soaps and minerals in water to dry too quickly, which may lead to water spotting or streaking.
Pre-Rinse the Vehicle
Before making contact with the paint, thoroughly rinse the vehicle with water.
This helps remove loose dirt and debris that could otherwise scratch the paint or film during the wash process.
A proper pre-rinse significantly reduces the risk of wash-induced swirl marks.
Use the Two-Bucket Washing Method
We recommend washing your vehicle using two buckets equipped with grit guards:
Bucket 1 – Shampoo Solution
Bucket 2 – Rinse Water
This helps prevent dirt and debris from being reintroduced to the paint surface. Always rinse your wash mitt in the rinse bucket before reloading it with shampoo.
Use Quality Wash Mitts
Use only soft wash media such as:
• Microfibre wash mitts
• Wool wash mitts
Always ensure your wash mitt is free of debris before each pass across the paint.
Avoid using:
• Sponges
• Brushes
• Abrasive wash tools
These can trap contaminants and cause scratches or swirl marks.
Wash from Top to Bottom
Always begin washing from the top panels of the vehicle and work your way downward. Upper panels generally accumulate less contamination, while lower panels collect more road grime.
When washing:
• Use light pressure only
• Allow the wash mitt to glide over the surface
• Wash in straight-line motions rather than circular movements
Final Rinse
Once the entire vehicle has been washed, thoroughly rinse the vehicle with clean water to remove all shampoo residue.
Drying the Vehicle
Allowing water to dry naturally may cause water spots due to mineral deposits.
Preferred Method – Contactless Drying
The safest drying method is using a filtered air blower or car dryer.
Work from:
• Roof
• Glass
• Upper panels
• Lower panels
This removes water without touching the paint.
Alternative Method – Microfibre Drying Towels
If using towels:
• Use a high-quality microfibre drying towel
• Apply minimal pressure
Recommended technique:
Lay the towel flat on the wet panel
Slowly pull the towel toward you
Allow the towel to absorb the water rather than rubbing the surface
KEY: Water Spot Prevention
Water spots occur when minerals in water dry on the vehicle surface.
To reduce the risk of water spotting:
• Always dry the vehicle immediately after washing
• Avoid washing in direct sunlight
• Avoid allowing sprinkler water to dry on the vehicle
• Use filtered or deionised water where possible
If water spots appear, they should be removed using coating-safe water spot removers or mild detailing products.
How to Maintain & Care for Your Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coatings create a durable protective layer that enhances gloss, improves hydrophobic behaviour, and protects your vehicle from environmental contaminants.
While coatings significantly reduce maintenance requirements, they still require proper care and regular washing.
Initial Curing Period
After the coating has been applied, it requires time to fully cure.
For the first 7 days:
• Do not wash the vehicle with chemicals
• Avoid automatic car washes
• Avoid applying waxes or detail sprays
If necessary, the vehicle may be rinsed with clean water to remove loose debris.
Regular Washing
To maintain the performance of your coating, wash your vehicle every 1–2 weeks, depending on driving conditions.
Regular washing prevents contamination buildup that may reduce the coating’s performance.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Avoid using products that contain:
• Acidic chemicals
• Strong alkaline cleaners
• Harsh degreasers
Always use pH-neutral automotive shampoos designed for coated vehicles.
Proper Wash Tools
Only use soft wash media such as:
• Microfibre wash mitts
• High-quality microfibre drying towels
Avoid using:
• Sponges
• Chamois
• Rubber drying blades
These can cause swirl marks, scratches, or marring.
Remove Contaminants Immediately
Certain contaminants can damage both paint and coatings if left untreated.
These include:
• Bird droppings
• Tree sap
• Bug splatter
• Fuel spills
Remove these contaminants as soon as possible using safe detailing products.
Avoid aggressively scrubbing the surface.
KEY: Water Spot Prevention for Coated Vehicles
Even with a ceramic coating, water spots may still occur due to mineral deposits in water.
To reduce water spotting:
• Dry the vehicle after washing
• Avoid leaving water sitting on the paint in direct sunlight
• Remove sprinkler water or rain deposits promptly
If water spots appear, they should be removed using coating-safe water spot removers or maintenance detail sprays.
How to Maintain & Care for Your Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Paint Protection Film is a durable polyurethane film designed to absorb impacts from road debris while protecting your vehicle’s paintwork.
Proper maintenance ensures the film maintains its clarity, durability, and self-healing properties.
Initial Curing Period
After installation, the film adhesive requires time to fully cure.
For the first 48 hours:
• Avoid washing the vehicle
• Avoid high-pressure water near film edges
• Avoid touching or lifting film edges
You may notice small moisture pockets or bubbles under the film. This is normal and will typically disappear within 1–3 weeks.
Washing Vehicles with PPF
Vehicles protected with PPF should be washed using pH-neutral shampoos and safe washing techniques.
Follow the Safe Vehicle Washing Guide above.
Avoid using automatic brush car washes, as they can damage the film.
PPF Self-Healing Properties
Many modern PPF products feature self-healing technology.
Minor swirl marks and light scratches can disappear when exposed to:
• Warm water
• Direct sunlight
• Gentle heat
This helps the film maintain a smooth and clear finish over time.
Safe Cleaning Products
For routine maintenance, we recommend:
• pH-neutral car shampoos
• PPF-safe bug removers
• Film-safe tar removers
Always test new products on a small inconspicuous area first.
KEY: Water Spot Prevention for PPF
Just like paint and coatings, PPF can develop water spots if mineral deposits are left on the surface.
To prevent water spotting:
• Dry the vehicle immediately after washing
• Avoid allowing sprinkler water to dry on the film
• Wash the vehicle regularly to prevent mineral buildup
If water spots occur, they can usually be removed with PPF-safe detailing products or water spot removers.
